Hippocampus coronatus

Scientific Name: Hippocampus coronatus Temminck & Schlegel, 1850 Common Name(s): Common Japanese seahorse; crowned seahorse; horned seahorse Synonyms: None known Description: Very high coronet that is sloped backwards. Top of the coronet may be fluted. Short snout with nose spine present. Single cheek spine and double eye spine. Body spines are irregular, but well developed. Large flattened spines that point sideways from the dorsal fin. Dorsal fin short in relation to body length. Colouration variable: typically light to dark brown, however more brightly coloured red and yellow specimens have been recorded17. Fine spots across the head, trunk and tail. Fine lines radiate from the eyes of some individuals.
